Kratom alternatives are a very hot subject right now. As you may have already learned, the DEA is set to list kratom (mitragyna speciosa) as a Schedule I substance come September 30th 2016. (Update: The DEA have delayed their scheduling pending public commentary.) This is being fought tooth and nail, and quite effectively I might […]
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a natural amino acid precursor to the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin. Therefore, it is often taken as a sleep aid at night and a mood regulator for the day, among other uses.
One drawback of an ordinary 5-HTP supplement is its short half-life. (See: PubMed - Kinetics of l-5-hydroxytryptophan in healthy subjects.) The body can break it down and dispose of it more quickly than we might prefer, meaning the supplement wears off quickly. However, there are some sustained release formulas of 5-HTP to ensure a steady supply of serotonin.
Note: 5-HTP is very much not recommended for people currently on any SSRI medication or any medication to treat Parkinson's.
Where to get 5-HTP
- iHerb - 5-HTP supplements catalog and Natrol 5-HTP Time Release formula
- Powder City - 5-HTP (Griffonia Seed Extract)
Why 5-HTP Doesn’t Work – A review of Natrol’s 5-HTP TR
5-HTP is a commonly recommended supplement because it’s natural, the body metabolizes it into the neurotransmitters we want when taking it (serotonin and melatonin), and when taking it in sufficient dosage, (up to 100 mg or so) it can help us get some quality sleep. There is a very important reason to learn why some […]
How to beat seasonal depression (SAD) symptoms this year

Stop depressive symptoms with these supplements
I’ve already written the preface to this article on my alternate blog, linked at the bottom. In short, I explained that “depression” is a cluster of symptoms that academics and mainstream medicine diagnose as a chemical condition. It’s their job to deal with it in terms of pills and brain chemicals. In contrast I acknowledged […]
