I didn’t have anything substantial planned for this Monday’s post as I’ve been on a vacation, but here goes nothing.
Just over a month ago, I purchased a bottle of DMAE liquid drops because this substance was said to increase vigilance, focus and to a lesser extent wakefulness and willpower. I started out with 50 mg per day on the first week and began to take about 100-200 mg per day, generally. I eventually noticed that about 100 mg once per day in the morning with cocoa was all that I needed.
As I mentioned in a previous writeup, the DMAE benefits I sought were based on a claimed increase in general energy and willpower from taking it, and a long-term decreased need for sleep.
Aside from my current state of health (good overall besides apparent symptoms of adrenal fatigue hampering my energy — more on this later in the week) the long-term DMAE benefits became apparent since I started taking it daily.
Long-term DMAE benefits
- Increase my focus, specifically vigilance and awareness of things
- Decrease reaction time, improved coordination (tested only on old video games)
- Decrease time needed for a restful sleep at night by about 1 hour (needing only 6-7 hours as opposed to 8-9)
- Minor increase in willpower — I find myself more willing to jump into things I’d find tedious or tiring
As I’ve only taken one break and increased the dosage just a couple of times, I noticed DMAE’s most vivid effects come to me only when I’ve lost my tolerance: tunnel vision and a mild pressure in the forehead/prefrontal area. Not sure what this means but it doesn’t seem to have affected me negatively.
When I take the same dosage of DMAE at least two days in a row, these effects disappear but their benefits come more subtly. I can’t tell if the purported long term effects are there, such as the mild stimulated energy that occurs all day.
I’ve seen a couple of studies which refer to DMAE dosage being much higher than what I’m currently taking, so I’m not sure what to expect yet. I’ve taken 200 mg twice in one day but didn’t notice a substantial difference.
Starting this week, I’m going to begin some Quantified Mind trials for DMAE to measure its effects on cognition and reaction time. I’ll probably post results after two weeks of daily tests. I will need to establish my baseline cognitive scores first so I can see if there is a measurable difference with DMAE vs. without.
An aside: Remember in my first post about DMAE that I read about some negative effects? The worst I’ve seen is that DMAE can be a potential teratogen in women who have just conceived, as the developing embryo can’t process DMAE in a safe way. Moral of the story? Don’t put stuff in your body if you are trying to have a normal baby.
Also, there have been studies linking DMAE to shorter lifespan in some animals, while others report increased lifespan. I have no clue what that means for humans.
DMAE is also used as a beauty product to get rid of wrinkles, saggy skin, eye bags and more. This isn’t of interest to me personally but was worth mentioning.
Conclusion as of today? DMAE seems useful, harmless and affordable. However I need to see if there is a measurable difference for myself as opposed to mere placebo effect for me to continue taking it. The DMAE benefits seem to outweigh any supposed risks.
