Nootropics are a new frontier in terms of “performance enhancing drugs,” better known as “smart drugs” because of their purported ability to make you smarter. These are substances that may improve cognitive performance and/or memory with little to no side effects. 1
The History of Nootropics
The history of smart drugs began with piracetam, and it found its application as a drug with the potential for improving the mental condition of people with cognitive diseases like Alzheimer’s. Since then, more smart drugs have been created and are currently being researched for their potential to slow, stop or even reverse cognitive decline.
Some nootropics are actual synthesized drugs:
Other nootropics are herbal or nutritional in nature:
Instead of waiting for the research to catch up and verify that these substances could or should be used by healthy people to potentially improve their cognition, some curious psychonauts set out on their own to test out nootropics for themselves. This flourished thanks to the Internet and this helped create a sort of underground subculture of nootropic users and enthusiasts.
Considering that there are so many smart drugs and stacks to choose from, it can be hard to decide what to try first, let alone know what will even work. Fortunately, we’ve put together a short list of the best nootropics for newbies to start with.
Why do some people take nootropics?
People may be interested in nootropics for any number of reasons. Normal, everyday people who work a two jobs, cram for university exams or who are building a business from home in between raising kids. All of these people want to feel “smarter,” be able to learn and retain information better, and focus more. Generally, they want to improve their cognition. (Who wouldn’t?)
Other people may be interested in the potential for nootropics to reverse cognitive decline that comes naturally with aging or living a less-than-ideal lifestyle.
A final but important group are also interested in experimenting with and discovering what nootropics can do for them. Entire communities exist based around smart drugs, cognitive enhancers and their potential. Longecity forum and Reddit’s /r/Nootropics are two such communities, full of neophytes and veteran psychonauts alike.
Though most people tend not to be as curious and courageous as these nootropic users, these experimenters tend to fuel new discoveries of effective smart drugs and stacks, and tend to debunk more of the hyped and overmarketed stuff.
Regardless of whatever category you fit in, if you are new to nootropics, you may find our list of the best nootropics for newbies to be a great place to start.
Where and how do you get nootropics?
Unfortunately, you’ll have a difficult time looking for nootropic drugs at supplement and health stores. Even though they are unscheduled drugs, the understanding is that they cannot be categorized as supplements. 2
However, thanks to online retailers you can purchase nootropics almost anywhere. The only issues with this are finding a good balance between quality control, price and customer service.
There are plenty of fly-by-night nootropic and supplement vendors with poor customer service and poor quality control who would be more than willing to help you part with your money and send you magic pixie dust.
Nonetheless, there are a few great vendors out there.
My opinion is that Powder City is one of the best nootropic and supplement vendors I’ve had the opportunity to order from (feel free to read my affiliate disclosure explaining why I shill their stuff). They test their product, they have excellent customer service, and offer some very reasonable prices compared to other less reputable and more expensive vendors.
Of course, if you find a vendor that suits your needs, all of the stuff in this guide should still be applicable. Just keep in mind that your experience may vary.
