Racetam Nootropic Drugs

The "Racetams" are a subcategory of nootropics and include substances like Piracetam, Aniracetam, Oxiracetam, Pramiracetam, and Phenylpiracetam. Most have been used to treat and reverse cognitive decline with varying degrees of success. Sometimes Noopept is classified as a racetam due to similar effects despite having a different structure. Despite being drugs, in most of the world the use of racetams without a prescription is not restricted due to a lack of toxicity, harmful side effects or dependence.

How Racetam Nootropics Work

In very broad and general terms, the racetams tend to work via the glutaminergic and AMPA neurotransmitter systems. Directly or indirectly these may affect the rate of glucose and oxygen consumption and acetylcholinergic neurotransmission by the brain. These may explain why these drugs are touted for their potential to aid in cognitive enhancement and it may also explain why adding a cholinergic (choline source) to a nootropic stack featuring a racetam is often used to mitigate certain mild side effects like headache or irritability.

Of all the racetams and nootropic drugs, Piracetam is perhaps the oldest and best known. Self-experimenters often start with this one because of its safety profile, dose range well-established by research, and a relatively well-documented range of effects and mechanism of action.

Pramiracetam – A stimulating nootropic racetam

March 9, 2014 By Pill Scout 1 Comment

About 6 months ago I had ordered some basic nootropics from Health Supplement Wholesalers: Noopept, aniracetam and pramiracetam. I sort of just let aniracetam and pramiracetam sit in a dark cupboard waiting to be used. Anyway, I recently got around to trying pramiracetam a while ago, and I liked what I took. (In fact, this […]

Aniracetam + cycling off Noopept

November 4, 2013 By Pill Scout 1 Comment

As a little exercise in cycling on and off of stacks, I decided to take the previous week off of Noopept and use aniracetam instead as needed. I wasn’t too diligent in taking my aniracetam but figured I’d mention it anyway for the sake of this week’s article. Aniracetam, and a little about it Aniracetam, […]

Your Piracetam dosage is wrong

June 17, 2013 By Pill Scout 21 Comments

Piracetam is a popular nootropic, or “smart drug,” perhaps because it was one of the first substances to be dubbed “nootropic” due to its studied cognitive-enhancing properties. What’s more, it lacks the negative effects of stimulants and methamphetamine analogues like Adderall, Ritalin, and so on. This is the basic definition of a nootropic — a […]
