In a nutshell, this stack is supposed to give you a nice boost of energy before a workout. There are times when you know you are supposed to go to the gym and you just don’t feel “ready” to put some real effort into it. This stack takes care of that little issue.
After trying it for myself several times before working out, I can see the Pre Workout Energy Stack easily becoming a mainstay in my regular supplement rotation: it’s inexpensive (30 day supply for $6 and 90 day for $10!) and highly effective.
Supplements included in the Pre Workout Energy Stack
Good old caffeine. Though tolerance can build up to it quickly, it increases wakefulness and reduces fatigue you may experience in the gym. Combined with theanine it makes for a calm, focused yet energized nootropic mix.
N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (NALT)
Mucuna Pruriens (Velvet Bean)
As I’ve written previously, mucuna pruriens is great as an aphrodisiac. However, it’s included in this stack as it helps increase dopamine levels could lead to an increase in motivation, which is great for those days where you just don’t “feel it.” Mucuna reduces prolactin (the antagonist of dopamine) and may increase testosterone levels in males who have low levels.2
Synephrine (Bitter orange extract)
Synephrine is somewhat of a new kid on the block. It’s a substance extracted from bitter orange and is considered a weaker version of ephedrine. Its stimulating effects come from its metabolite octopamine34
Like ephedrine, it may be usable as a stimulant and a fat burner. IMHO, it may be a lot safer than AMP Citrate as included in Powder City’s Energy Stack as it has some actual research behind it.

How does the Pre Workout Energy Stack work?
Just taking a quick glance at the supplements included, they are all dopaminergic and/or adrenergic. This is how most of the big-name, premium-priced pre-workout supplements work but Powder City’s formulation is more bare-bones and far less expensive.
(In fact, you’ll find some of the good ones contain these very same ingredients.)
Boosting dopamine will increase your subjective energy levels, decrease subjective tiredness and make you feel alert and motivated. The adrenergic substances caffeine and synephrine act on the central nervous system and presumably this helps kick your muscles into gear.
Potential Side Effects of the Pre Workout Energy Stack
As with any dose-dependent stimulant, you always want to pay close attention to dosage. This is for your own safety.
The first time I took the stack, I used a scale to figure out about how much of a dose I was getting with each scoop of powder. I followed the recommended doses, and even with that I tested very tiny, insignificant doses beforehand just to play it safe.
Every time I dose this stack (and other stacks), I take all the supplement pouches out of the clear plastic bag they include the stack in. After I dose a pouch, I put it back into the plastic bag so I don’t accidentally add double of a supplement. With substances like caffeine, the results of a dosage mistake can be deadly. So be safe and always keep track of what you’re dosing and how much. When in doubt, throw it out.
If you have a history of heart or other cardiovascular issues you may want to consult with a medical professional before taking anything like this stack.
Taking all of the above precautions, I believe this stack is perfectly safe when used responsibly.
My Recommended Stack Adjuncts
The cool thing about buying stacks like this is that they are modular. You can add or omit any ingredients as you please.
- ~150 mg Theanine (to take away any potential jitters or anxiety)
- Creatine (for muscular strength and mass)
- Beta-Alanine (for muscular endurance and recovery)
- Citrulline (for reduced soreness and improved “pump”)
- Drink plenty of water

My experience with the Pre Workout Energy Stack
I dose this up to 1/2 hour before I head to the gym along with the above adjuncts. When the main ingredients kick in, I do a light warmup and I’m ready to work out. I only take the stack once on workout days, I don’t use it for anything else.
With the caffeine, I use a modest dosage of about 50-100 mg and follow the other recommended doses on the label. It hasn’t failed me yet, and unless I’m extremely sore, it always lends to a good gym session.
