For the uninitiated, kratom is an opiate-like leaf that has stimulant and/or relaxant properties. It can serve as an anxiety reducer, a pick-me-up for when you’re ready to head out the door, or a general relaxant to take the edge off a long day.
Kratom is also a fairly complex ordeal in its own right with different strains and tolerances to build up while using it, so I will have to cover this one more in-depth after I do a little more research and personal experimentation.
Good things that have been written about kratom
Victor at Bold & Determined:
To put it simply Kratom makes me feel happier and I’m even nicer to people and more open and ready for long conversations. If you know me, you know I have no patience for this type of thing. Not so on Kratom.
On “bad days”, Kratom makes the bad go away. Kratom gives me a feeling of well-being but not sedation. I always want to work when using Kratom.
Chris at Good Looking Loser:
As with anxiety (I have less anxiety, most of the time), I also have a sense of well-being/better mood more than if I weren’t using Kratom.
I’m rarely ever in a bad mood.
My first experiences with kratom
I did not go with the renowned Happy Hippo Herbals, run by Chris from Good Looking Loser. The kratom I found happened to be in a tobacco shop I visited while on vacation, sold by a company called Kratom Therapy. It was more of an impulse buy than anything.
The variety I selected was their white-vein Thai powder, which reportedly has a stimulating effect.
The first time I tried it, I felt relaxed but didn’t notice much of anything. This is because I did not have my scale on hand. However, I did not catch any sleep the night before I was supposed to wake up super early to catch my flight. I took a little more and tried to sleep on the plane, and this unfortunately did not help me get any sleep. So I suppose you could say the kratom had its intended effect!
Now, following the use of kratom at two separate instances within 24 hours, estimated at less than 2 grams per dose, I ended up having this weird sensation of vertigo that would hit me randomly, even though I had not dosed it in over a week. It would recur randomly throughout the week I did a little research and saw this was not unusual, but thought for the amount of time it happened it seemed weird. I did not take more kratom following those two times I dosed. Eventually the feeling went away.
A couple of weeks following that, I dosed kratom again after waking up early in the morning for its wakeful effects. I felt awake a while after taking it, not unlike the feeling of gentle wakefulness you can get from taking adrafinil, but just a little cleaner. The wakeful effects diminished after a few hours, but they were a very productive few hours. The vertigo this time was very mild, and did not recur in the following days.
Most recently, I brewed kratom tea and took a nap and had an interesting naptime experience with some intense dream visions. I may explore this avenue in-depth.
So is kratom good?
I’m not sure yet. Aside from the vertigo-like side effects, my experience was positive. I want to try more of the strains, buy it from Happy Hippo this time and give it another shot. In the meantime I’ll try to finish up the white vein powder I have on hand using the method Victor wrote about at the bottom of his post.
