Noopept: A nootropic force to be reckoned with

October 7, 2013 By Pill Scout 17 Comments

I’m convinced that Noopept is the best traditional nootropic drug available in terms of price and efficacy.

Noopept is similar to other racetams but packs a bigger punch in a smaller dose. Some nootropic nerds won’t even call it a racetam, but it falls into that canon because of how it affects the brain.

I was recently contacted by a fellow on behalf of Health Supplement Wholesalers (now known as Powder City) for me to give my honest thoughts of their service and the product on my site, and they were prepared to send me a free sample of a nootropic of my choosing.

Normally I’d be wary of someone contacting me for this sort of thing, but this seemed like a great opportunity to try something I had been putting off for a while. Considering that I had been away from nootropics all summer in order to focus on maximizing my baseline cognitive abilities using nutrition and had made some major headway, I was primed to try a new nootropic. I opted for Noopept since there was considerable hype on the Net about it and I wanted to experience it for myself.

Early last week, my package of Noopept arrived in a small silver pouch, labeled with an approximate dosage and the volume (5 grams). It was accompanied by a tiny blue scooper which looks like a Martian’s helmet antenna. The small dosage compared to other nootropics is apparently because of its potency, a 10 mg serving. According to the packaging it takes 2 or 3 of those little blue scoops to make about 10 mg. Compared to piracetam, Noopept is supposed to be about 1000 times more effective, hence the much smaller dose in milligrams. It’s a suspicious looking white powder that tastes like piracetam’s synthetic, bitter grapefruit rind taste.

bulk noopept powder in bagRight now the current going price for the amount they sent me is at a $12 value, at least according to the current price for 5 grams of Noopept on their site. Based on a quick Google search, you’d be hard pressed to find a better value for Noopept anywhere else coupled with good service and product, which is another reason why I took them on their offer. In lieu of waiting for my sample Noopept to arrive, I ordered some other items (ALCAR, choline and a couple other things) and can vouch for the service that Health Supplement Wholesalers offers.

I almost forgot to mention the third-party laboratory analysis for purity. Many nootropic suppliers get these substances overseas from some strange sellers and may not test for purity or contaminants. Health Supplement Wholesalers discloses the laboratory analysis reports on their website, as you can see on their Noopept order page.

Considering the fact that 5 grams of noopept is approximately 500 doses, you can get yourself a year supply of this stuff for under $20, assuming you take just the recommended 10 milligrams once or twice a day. The scooper that came with the Noopept is depicted below with a US quarter for reference. As far as nootropics are concerned, I don’t care who you are: this is an amazing deal.

noopept blue micro scooper

I recall paying $30 on Amazon for a 500 gram tub of Primaforce piracetam (back when Primaforce distributed it) a couple years back. 500 grams is only going to last you 100 servings, which if you’re taking it once or twice a day will only last you between 2 and 6 months. Noopept is stronger in terms of effect per dosage and purportedly more effective than piracetam in regard to its nootropic effects since it can more easily pass through the blood-brain barrier.

Daily Noopept notes for the week

Note that I have been on hiatus from any cholinergics (DMAE, huperzine, etc.) and nootropics (Piracetam, etc.) so any sensitivity I may have had in the past may have returned. Note also that this week was particularly busy and celebratory compared to my typical boring, lazy and sober days. It couldn’t have been a better week to put this stuff to the test. In the future I’ll have to do some Quantified Mind tests to see how it does.

Sunday September 29: Late in the day, I took a dosage of Noopept, the recommended minimum 2 microscoops which should be somewhere under 10 mg with some water and 50 mg DMAE on top of my daily lecithin for some choline. Did not ‘feel’ anything. A couple hours later I took a sublingual dosage because I had read about it, and prepared for an all-nighter with some freshly brewed guayusa. Subtly, my memory became like a sponge. My natural fascination was amplified, but not into a tunnel-vision hyper-focus as I’d experienced with high doses of DMAE or Huperzine.

Monday: Continuing my all-nighter into the wee hours of dawn, I slept for a couple hours, then got up on just 3 hours of sleep. I took another ~10 mg dosage sublingually, then washed the remainder down with guayusa. It tastes like piracetam. No choline this time. Within 20 minutes I did not feel that sunken-eyed drowsy feeling I often get from being sleep deprived. I knew I was tired but then I was able to complete my work. After finishing that, I slept for another 15 minutes. I couldn’t sleep more than that! I felt absolutely normal for the rest of the day, but took one more dosage in the afternoon anyway. Not sure if it was the Noopept, but I did not feel like I normally would if I had just woken up from less than 5 hours of sleep, which is to say absolutely dead. That evening I got a normal night’s sleep.

Tuesday: In the morning upon waking I took the usual recommended dosage of Noopept, 10 mg.. Went out to my campus, took notes and completed some coursework, and caught up with friends. Felt like a particularly good day. All speech and thought came fluidly. Complex ideas were formulated with little mental strain, stories were conjured with ease: All par for the course of a good nootropic. When I arrived home at mid-noon, my other package from HSW had arrived, so I took 10 mg Noopept, ~200 mg choline bitartrate and ~200 mg ALCAR. Felt on top of things, and slept fine that evening.

Wednesday: Nothing unusual. Upon waking I had more Noopept at the usual dosage on top of some lecithin, ~200 mg choline, ~200 mg ALCAR and went about my day. Coming home I took another Noopept dosage with same choline and ALCAR dose. Same as the previous days (good) except my dreams that night were extremely vivid, moreso than Huperzine. This is attributable to the ALCAR.

Thursday: Same morning and noon dose as Wednesday. After completing my usual work I found myself sheltered away in my room reading about nutrition, choline’s role in the body and ALCAR for a couple hours, with a few breaks in between. I found it particularly easy and effortless to form a comprehensive picture as to how these substances fit with one another, how they interact and perform their duties in the body as well as any factors that affect them. It’s got to be the Noopept considering I don’t normally have the same sustained interest or energy to do that for hours. I stayed out late, got home and prepared for class the next day.

Friday: Same as above with a long lecture that day, waking up early. Took my recent Noopept + lecithin + choline + ALCAR mix and went off to attend a lecture. It managed to stave off fatigue for the few hours I sat there. Got home, crashed out in the afternoon for a nap and had some very vivid dreams, not to mention the ability to recall them. Noopept effects seem to be the same as it has been since Sunday: overall good mood and fluid mental performance. Finished some last minute work then went out again and arrived home late and drunk.

Saturday: Woke up after about 6 hours of sleep, naturally. Took the same dosage of Noopept as before in morning and noon although much earlier than usual. Accomplished some chores until the afternoon and caught up on some studying until evening. I took my creatine and did some heavy lifting as I’d been neglecting the iron this week. After feeling sufficiently sore and spent, I went out again that evening, felt a little sleepy until I got some drink in me. It seems Noopept loses steam after several hours but lets you down gently as any nootropic should, although I could chalk that up to my workout and my drinking. Got home late and slept well.

Today: Remembered my dreams again. However, no Noopept, choline, DMAE or ALCAR today. Only my usual vitamins and lecithin with some green tea. Cognition and mood felt normal albeit a little subdued. Today was a day for relaxing and having a clear mind. Haven’t noticed any significant decline (or any decline at all for that matter) in mental function or mood relative to dosing on Noopept.

Noopept in conclusion

Although it’s only been a week since I first began taking it, I’d recommend Noopept simply because of how cheap and (subjectively) effective it is relative to other nootropics. Scientists can’t seem to agree as to exactly how the racetam compounds work, but this one does what it says on the tin.

If you’re interested in purchasing Noopept I recommend going with Health Supplement Wholesalers for their excellent service and the fact that they’re selling this stuff in tiny amounts at a bargain price for people who don’t want to commit themselves to something they aren’t even sure about.

1 gram for approximately $5 (as of this post) means you’re getting a premium nootropic for 5 cents a dose and you have little to lose. Unless you’re actively staying away from nootropics as I was, no one who takes cognitive enhancement seriously should be without this stuff. Other sites are selling Noopept capsules for four times that amount. Unless you prefer capsules, why bother?

The recommended 10 mg as needed throughout the day did it for me. I paired it with a cholinergic like DMAE and ALCAR just because it’s good practice but didn’t notice that I needed it that much. With that, your mileage may vary.

(See this post: Selecting a Choline Source for your Nootropic Stack)

Some people have done 30 mg or more but that could be a possible waste. An experimental waste at best. I will experiment with smaller doses before going to higher ones. My experience with past nootropics has been that more is not necessarily better (brain fog).

(Note also that taking noopept sublingually may be better than taking it orally.)

Last but not least, I give my thanks to HSW for contacting me and sending me a product I’d honestly recommend to my readers. I recommend HSW in good faith as I ordered some ALCAR and choline from them with my own money. It arrived quickly and as promised, and is of good quality, so I can vouch for them outside of this whole Noopept arrangement.

HSW is a legit distributor with great service and competitive prices amid many shaky nootropic and bulk supplement dealers out there on the Internet, so I’m going to be ordering from them in the foreseeable future as well as making them my main nootropic affiliate here on this site.

How long can this stuff be taken without adverse side effects? Indefinitely?

    • http://pillscout.com Pill Scout

Studies on Noopept have been nearly 60 days long, and people on Longecity and reddit’s nootropic boards have been taking this stuff for longer, and seem to be doing well. As for any adverse effects related to Noopept, the only ones noted came with dosage, not duration. People have experienced brain fog from taking too much. But this is typical of taking too much of just about any nootropic or cholinergic. When they stop taking those high doses or stop altogether they go back to normal.

Interesting, I don’t know enough about nootropics to do any experimenting with them as of yet. I would however be interested in hearing what your stack of supplements for enhancing cognition would be.

As for myself, I prefer to get the most out of what I can do simply with just nutrition, sleep and stress management as I currently do not supplement with anything (I don’t even drink coffee) and am doing quite well. However, the potential to rise to a whole new level is enticing. In all likelihood I’ll probably keep doing what I’m doing and wring the most out of the basics until I find a supplemental boost absolutely necessary.

In my opinion Noopept is some pretty dangerous stuff. All the studies I found on it were dodgy to say the least. After taking it for a few days with very positive effects, you may start to notice some pretty serious side effects.

One of these side effects is short term memory loss. For example, you suddenly forget what you were going to do next. Under normal circumstances (not on Noopept) this may occur for a split second before you suddenly remember. On Noopept it feels like your mind goes completely blank, like a black hole effect. Once you start to experience this you will realise that Noopept is some serious shit.

In addition to this I have observed that it diminishes emotion in a way that makes experiences less significant and memorable. This also starts after a few days and gradually builds up.

After about 5 days of use you might become extremely agitated and prone to snapping at any moment. You will feel the pressure in your head from the stress.

For first few days you might experience mild visual hallucinations and a general feeling of awe, similar to the start of a trip, however things will quickly start to go negative.

Unlike more conventional and widely studied Nootropics, Noopept will give you a vibe that it’s fucking with your head.

I can understand that some people on Longecity rave about it, but it’s rather evident from the posts on that website that a lot of their brains are fried and that they are dependant on various substances for whatever reason. There’s some smart guys on there but the rest just look like drug abusers/addicts to me.

Any well grounded person will recognize that Noopept is not something you want to mess with for a long time, or even at all. Be warned.

Interesting claims. Could you explain the following for my readership?

      1. Where did you receive your Noopept from and how much did you pay for it?
      2. What dosage, how frequently and for how long did you take Noopept?
      3. Did you or do you currently take anything else during the time of dosing with Noopept?

If you could answer these, I would be glad to put your site link back into your comment. Until then, I can’t leave you a calling card out of respect for my readership as these are some serious claims to make without having any real details to put behind your experience. My experience with Noopept has been exactly the opposite and I’ve been taking it every single day since I wrote this post, save for the last week where I decided to cycle off of it with aniracetam until this coming Sunday. I’ve had no hallucinations, no stress, no emotional trauma and no memory issues.

In my opinion Noopept is either a placebo, or extremely weak. Although if you take enough of it, it simply has nasty side effects that can be felt. I think people get excited about it and write about the so called “effects” it has because they are “into” nootropics.

[Care to disclose who sold you the Noopept, how much you were taking? It’s possible, but there aren’t any profound psychoactive effects like alcohol or LSD that you can get from nootropics, so anyone who is looking for that is going to be sorely disappointed. This is why some nootropic nerds take tests to ensure that what they are taking actually works.]

Same as like people being into prayers and saying praying has an effect and writing elaborate paragraphs about the effects of prayers, or being into homeopathy and saying the homeopathic lactose pills have an effect, and writing about the effects.

[Unless you have an objective means of understanding the effects of a thing, like a battery of cognitive tests, you can only rely on a subjective feeling. Comparing a substance like Noopept with placebo like homeopathy is hilarious because unlike homeopathy, Noopept actually has plenty of literature on its method of action]

LOL, the population is so fake. [“the population is so fake” — What??] There are very few things that actually truly work and have a true effect. Ive used about a hundred different supplements, and it always amazes me that people report effects from things that are either ultra-weak or inactive. Its so puzzling. I dont know how people can be into racetams as well.

[“A hundred different supplements.” If they had no effect, it’s likely because they didn’t contain the active stuff the bottle says it contains. Secondly, the body doesn’t absorb dry herbs too well which I’m assuming are the ones you took. Third, did you even know what you were looking for? There’s tons of scientific literature explaining the method of action of various herbal compounds and their effects.]

I mean come on, a real nootropic that enhances mental performance is something like adrafinil, ritalin or tianeptine. [Son, those are stimulants. A good night’s rest can enhance your mental performance similarly and for free] Things like Ginko, Ginseng, and Noopept are bunk. Ill continue taking the noopept i have though for a little longer.

[Never tried Ginkgo, but you’re sorely mistaken about whole red ginseng and noopept. In not providing your own battery of cognitive tests proving their inability to work, I’m inspired to go out of my way to prove the efficacy of these drugs. After all, my readers would appreciate an actual investigation rather than simple conjecture and opinion.]

Yes, and unbelievably, some people drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages *every morning* to remain more alert and awake than they would’ve otherwise.

Some gym rats *actually* take preworkout supplements before they hit the weights, and these blends often include a stimulant of some kind.

So while “need” is a strong word, using substances for mind and body is extremely common. “Ouch,” yes

I started taking this drug yesterday 3/23/15 and started out with one scoop and drank a bottle of water. After two hrs I felt nothing. So I decided to take another scoop after the two hrs and eat something as well. Still nothing. Today is 3/24/15 and I tried again but this time I did two scoops…nothing. I have since taken another scoop around noon time and still feel nothing but aggravation and unfocused. I am going to try to start tomorrow with 3 scoops and see if there is any difference. If this doesn’t work I will be convinced that either I got robbed or that their is no hope for me in using this drunk..Feeling hopeless at this point.

I hope I didn’t give you any wrong impressions or expectations about Noopept. What are your goals with it, what is your problem you are trying to solve?

It’s a very subtle drug compared to others, and all signs point to its reported benefits coming in over the long term rather than immediately.

      Here’s one example:
      http://www.longecity.org/forum/topic/57030-noopept-long-term-experience-more-than-a-simple-nootropic/

Ultimately it’s experimental. Some people have reported “immediate” effects from Noopept but these are subjective and can be placebo.

Did you buy from Powder City? If so, they may be able to give you a refund if you think it’s completely bunk.

However I would continue to give it a try over the next month (at least if it’s within the refund period) and maybe take some cognitive tests to see that it’s working. There’s a chance you might be pleasantly surprised.

If you’d like to e-mail me about your problem, visit my contact page and I’ll write you back and see if I can help.

I appreciate your response. I don’t think you gave me the wrong impression, the Internet did. After reading the response on how quickly it worked and then trying different forms on ingestion nothing has seemed to work. I am mainly trying to take it to help with clarity of thinking, focus and attention to detail. I have a very hard time with staying on task until completion.

Pill Scout, you might not know this, but reportedly oral ingestion of noopept has terrible bioavailability compared to sublingual.

        See: http://www.reddit.com/r/Nootropics/comments/31fhf4/sublingual_noopept_wow/

        • http://pillscout.com/ Pill Scout

Thanks a lot for the link Jakub. It would be worth a try and writing a post about. I’d tried it sublingually when I first got noopept but didn’t notice much difference and read of others dismissing the theory.

I still have some noopept left over from last year and I’m thinking about trying it again under some of my tests after this uridine stack, it might be worth evaluating noopept sublingual vs oral and see how it works out.

  • Alina

Hey, I’m going to order some Noopept from Powder City, I’d like to order Alpha GPC capsules and ALCAR capsules, is that indicated? Should I order the powder type? I’m ordering Noopept powder but I’ll use the little scoop to take it. I’m not sure about the amount of GPC and ALCAR I should take with each 10 mg of Noopept, should I take one capsule of each with the 10mg of Noopept? I’m confused about this part. Thank you! Should I also take lecitine?

    • http://pillscout.com/ Pill Scout

Hi Alina, taking 1 capsule each of 500 mg ALCAR and Alpha-GPC capsules should be fine. You could even just take one or the other.

Please note that both serve to increase brain acetylcholine and they may be redundant.

Alpha-GPC is considered one of the best choline sources for nootropics and ALCAR, while not strictly a choline source, can also increase brain acetylcholine levels. Choosing one over the other is based on personal preference and budget.

See Selecting a choline source for your nootropic stack for more detailed info.

As for powder versus capsules, it’s a big difference if you want to control dosage. Capsules cost a little more but are ideal if you don’t want to measure out the powders every time. Powders are good if you like to control dose or make your own capsules.

If you experience symptoms of excess choline when taking both, you can switch to just taking one or the other with your noopept. I generally just use ALCAR.

Your preferences may be different, and I think that getting one bottle of ALCAR and one bottle of Alpha-GPC would help you determine which works best for you.

Lecithin on its own is not an ideal source of choline for nootropic use IMO, but is good for your brain and body health in any case. I prefer sunflower lecithin.

How do you plan to take your noopept? You may want to try taking it sublingually as I describe here.

Feel free to let me know if you have any thoughts or questions.

I ordered some Noopept from Powder City. Fast delivery. Good packaging.
But Noopept is crap. When something truly works, you downright notice it.
Noopept, like Piracetam and others are all good and all, but in microscopic doses.
Even Ritalin in micro doses has been proven to elevate IQ.
I see too many negative reviews of Noopept, the rest (positive) is propaganda.
